“Plastic-Free” Labels Now In The UK

A new trust mark has been introduced in the UK, with the intention of helping shoppers find food and drinks that aren’t made from plastic.
Iceland Leading The Way
Iceland are the first store to adopt this mark, after campaigns from the group “A Plastic Planet” for retailers to work towards advertising green products in this way.
A lot of general household items are sold without people knowing they contain plastic. Other than the obvious items such as sweets in wrappers, products that you wouldn’t expect such as tea bags, contain plastics that make it hard to recycle.
Big Changes To Come
This is a step towards the government’s plan to eradicate single-use plastic by 2025, as the effect of this waste is catastrophic for sea life and potentially human health in the long term.
Sian Sutherland, co-founder of A Plastic Planet, has said on the trust mark: “finally shoppers can be part of the solution, not the problem.”
A Plastic Planet are also currently pushing for supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles, pressuring major retailers to do more to tackle the problem.
Dutch store Ekoplaza, who already have a plastic-free aisle in their stores, are also planning to adopt this label in 74 of its own stores. They are currently aiming for every store to have the mark on selected products by the end of the year.
